Cowan Court

Cowan Court is a new accommodation at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. It consists of 68 en-suite rooms, including 3 rooms specifically designed for disabled students.

Trojanwood is proud to have made and delivered the bespoke freestanding furniture for all 68 rooms. Each room comprises of a double bed, desk and two bedside tables. Of those 14 rooms also include a chest of drawers.

The furniture is made from solid oak to fit in with the reclaimed timber cladding exterior, and oak interior. Laminated plywood is used on the majority of the furniture to give it strength and a modern feel. Laminate is used as it adds to the colour scheme of the room and is practical for students.

Tree Of Knowledge and Shelving

Dame Bradbury’s School, Safron Walden

This project was done for architects Chadwick Dryer Clarke. This was a very interesting project that the whole team enjoyed working on. The tree is formed from flexible plywood and MDF, all held together with a steel core structure. The finish is a vibrant green Polyurethane lacquer. The tree forms seating for reading or story-telling with integrated computers, which allows audio recordings to be played, and has a central LED-lit snug within the trunk. Knitted within the roots of the tree are book shelves. The shelving around the room is constructed out of MDF covered in white laminate with a PVC edge, the shelf uprights are sprayed grey with a Polyurethane lacquer.

Reception Desk for PRP Architects In Smithfields Market

Measuring in at 3m long and 710mm wide the desk is made from 50mm thick MDF, which is veneered in, stained injected poplar. Triple mitred edges are used to give the desk seamless joints and making it look like one piece. The finish on the product is a 10 % sheen polyurethane lacquer, this helps to give the product a natural feel about it.

The features of this product include space for two people to be seated, plus room to accommodate two computers as it contains two cable ports and a cable tray underneath to hide the wiring. There is space either side of the desk to house filing cabinets and a shelf for paperwork.

To add to the industrial feel of the product there is a bespoke polished concrete front that overhangs and is offset from the desk front.

Major development at Trojanwood Ltd

In December Trojanwood Ltd received a delivery of a brand new, high tech woodworking CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Router. It had been shipped all the way from Italy and weighing 3.5 tons it was carefully maneuvered and installed in the workshop in Spalding. The 4-axis SCM Universal 3615 has a working area of 10ft by 5ft and is capable of cutting panel and solid wood components as well as plastics.

It can cut components at far greater accuracy and consistency than a skilled maker is capable of. This machine is not designed to replace our skilled makers, but to aid production and to reduce the time they have to spend on machining. This allows them to focus on highly skilled tasks such as hand finishing the products off to the highest of standards.

Here are a few examples of what has already been done.

As it’s a new toy for our makers here, it has also been a steep learning curve which has meant that the past few months have been challenging and hugely rewarding for James Thornley and Steve Beba, who have taken on the roles of CNC programmers.

Trojanwood Ltd as a company would like to thank the highly professional SCM engineers and trainers who have been extremely helpful and understanding in helping to develop our skills. The machine has dramatically improved our capacity, and is a great addition to our production armoury.

We are looking forward to furthering our skills and taking on new challenges in the coming months.
